MEC to Act as Local Receiver for Foreclosed and Abandoned Properties in Athol, Region

The Montachusett Enterprise Center (MEC) has been selected by the Town of Athol to act as a local receiver for abandoned and foreclosed properties.  MEC is the non-profit development arm of the Montachusett Regional Planning Commission.

Under Massachusetts law, local governments and the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office can petition the Housing or Superior Courts to appoint a receiver to rehabilitate abandoned properties which present a public nuisance, health, or safety hazard where the owner fails to correct the problem after due notice.  Receivers act under court supervision to make necessary repairs and present their costs to the court for collection from the owner.  Receivers are designated by the Attorney General based on their experience and ability to manage rehabilitation projects.
