MassDOT has created a new website that provides a strategy for reducing speeds on roadways for the purpose of creating safer roads.

The Safe Speeds homepage states that “… keeping people safe on Massachusetts roadways …” is MassDOT’s priority.

Furthermore, the website states that “One life lost or altered by a serious injury on any roadway is unacceptable. In Massachusetts...the speed that people drive can make a big difference on the safety of our roadways. Higher speed increases the risk of a fatal or serious crash and reduces the likelihood of survival. Every mph matters: each 1 mph increase that a person drives can be attributed to a 3% increase in potential loss of life. Safe vehicle speeds make streets better for everyone, whether you are traveling by car, wheelchair, bicycle, stroller, foot, or bus. … MassDOT is committed to helping realize safer speeds across the Commonwealth to prevent serious crashes. Our goal is zero fatalities and serious injuries.

Traffic Calming ExamplePart of the strategy addresses the role of setting speed limits which can be found at: The Role of Speed Limits on Massachusetts Roadways

The guidance states that setting speed limits should not be a standalone project but “ … should be included as a part of a broader strategy that includes design changes to the road and other educational components.”

The MRPC encourages member communities to examine the Safe Speeds website to learn more about implementing the safe speed measures and the opportunities to seek grant funding.
